Seminole Native American Patchwork Skirt & Jacket Set
Seminole Native American Patchwork Skirt & Jacket Set
A little background information on these exquisite examples of Native American culture…
Known as the “Unconquered People,” the Seminoles are descendants of just 300 Native Americans that managed to elude being captured by the US Army, and are the only Native Americans who weren’t forced into a peace treaty with the US. After being forced out of their native lands, they stood tough in the state of Florida and merged together with existing tribes. Each separate pattern in the patchwork rows is supposed to signify an important family lineage, celebrating their family histories. Starting in approximately the late 1930’s to the early 1940’s, the Seminoles were creating similar pieces to sell to tourists that visited the Florida swamplands.
